FAQS

How do I become a volunteer?
Completing a volunteer application adds your name to the tournament volunteer waitlist. The volunteer waitlist is made available to committee chairpersons in need of new recruits to fill their committee roster. Returning committee members are given priority during the recruitment process. When committee openings arise, positions are filled from the volunteer waitlist based on the committee interests selected, the date that an application is received, and response time after being contacted by a committee chair. To become a volunteer, simply complete the appropriate volunteer application form.

What are the tournament dates?
The tournament will take place on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort & Spa the week of May 5 - 11, 2008. The majority of volunteer hours will occur during these dates; however, some committees operate a few days prior to and after tournament week.

What are the volunteer requirements?
Volunteers should meet the following conditions:

  • Volunteers are required to purchase a volunteer uniform that must be worn during scheduled working hours (volunteers are to provide their own khaki slacks).
  • Volunteers are requested to commit a minimum of 24 volunteer hours to the tournament. The exact schedule varies by committee, but typically breaks down to approximately 6 hours a day over 4 days. Most committees are fully operational during professional play, therefore requiring a minimum commitment of 2 weekday shifts in addition to weekend shifts. Some committees require orientation and training sessions; these hours count towards the 24-hour time commitment.
  • Committees may have other requirements; such as submitting to a DMV records check so that permission may be given to operate a motor vehicle during tournament week.
  • Committee chairpersons can answer any questions regarding scheduling or any additional requirements for their specific committee when they contact you.

Can I still volunteer if I cannot commit to the 24-hour minimum volunteer requirement?
Priority is given to applicants who can commit a minimum of 24-hours, including weekday shifts, to the tournament. A volunteer application will not be turned away; however, most committee chairpersons are looking for volunteers with flexible availability when developing their tournament week schedules. If you cannot commit to 24-hours, your name will still be added to the waitlist with this specification included. You may still be contacted to volunteer; however, the tournament office is only able to give appreciation vouchers to volunteers who complete the 24-hour minimum requirement.

What is included in the volunteer uniform package and what is the total cost to me?
The 2008 volunteer package costs $65 and consists of the following tournament logo apparel by Adidas: a golf shirt, long-sleeve jacket, and either a cap or a visor. Volunteers must provide their own khaki slacks, which are required to complete the volunteer uniform. The package also includes a weeklong credential for admission to the tournament, a volunteer parking pass, and a copy of the volunteer guidelines. In addition, each volunteer receives a special 50% discount when purchasing a grounds or clubhouse badge during the month of March. To receive this discount, badges must be purchased through the tournament office and a limit of two badges per volunteer applies. The complimentary golf offer is not included with the discounted badges. To show our appreciation to all volunteers who complete their 24-hour time commitment, the tournament office presents a Volunteer Appreciation Voucher by mail following the tournament. The Volunteer Appreciation Voucher is redeemable at one of the golf courses or restaurants at Kingsmill Resort and Spa.

After submitting a volunteer application, how do I know if I have been selected to be a volunteer for the event?
When a committee opening arises, the chairperson of that committee will contact you with additional details about the committee and its requirements. If you are interested in the position described to you, simply accept the offer. The chairperson will then request that you complete any additional information needed and send payment for the volunteer uniform package. If the opening is not of interest to you, explain this to the committee chairperson and request that your name remain on the waitlist or that it be removed.

Will I receive volunteer training?
Committee training sessions are scheduled and conducted at the discretion of each committee chairperson. When contacted by your committee chairperson, he or she will inform you of any training necessary for your position.

Why should I become a volunteer?
The Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill depends on volunteers to make it a success; we rely on over 1,500 volunteers during tournament time. It would not be possible to run the tournament without the thousands of hours provided by volunteers such as yourself. Your volunteer involvement allows the tournament to benefit the local community. In 2007, the tournament donated a total of $221,000 to 19 local and regional charitable organizations. As a volunteer, you receive a credential for admission the entire tournament week, allowing you to enjoy tournament access even when you are not working. Purchasing the volunteer uniform package enables you to receive exclusive tournament logo merchandise at a discounted price. You also gain the benefit of working behind the scenes of a successful LPGA Tour event, and may even have the opportunity to meet an LPGA Tour Player. These are just a few of the many benefits enjoyed by volunteers of the tournament. Once involved, you are sure to discover more worthwhile and exciting reasons to support your decision.

Is a position on my committee of choice guaranteed?
A variety of committee openings may become available; however, specific committee assignments are not guaranteed. If you are contacted about an opening and it is not of interest to you, explain this to the committee chairperson and request that your name remain on the waitlist or request that it be removed completely if you are no longer available.

If I am not selected as a volunteer in 2007, does my information remain on the waitlist?
The volunteer waitlist is updated yearly. If your information is on the waitlist and you were not contacted to volunteer, you will be contacted regarding your desire to remain or be removed from the list.

How do I remove my name from the volunteer pool or waitlist?
To remove your information from the tournament database, contact tournament headquarters by phone at 757.253.3985 or email at muo@kingsmill.com.
