Sorenstam Steady through Round Three, Holds Four Stroke Lead at Kingsmill
Arguably one of the greatest women's golfers of all time, Annika Sorenstam is proving that through age and injuries, she can still play. And play well.
While Sorenstam continued solid play, defending champion Suzann Pettersen came out firing for the pins. After shooting even par on the first two days, and barely making the cut, Pettersen strung together a birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie string on holes 13 through 16.
Following opening rounds of 64 and 66, which set the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill's lowest 36-hole record, Sorenstam stayed on a roll, carding a 2-under-par 69 setting the tournament's lowest 54-hole record.
"Today was all about saves for me. I chipped very well. I had a great par save on 8, good saves on 9 and 10," Sorenstam said. "I was relaying on my short game."
She finished with a 6-under-par, her best showing in any round at the Michelob ULTRA Open through her four tournament appearances.
Christina Kim was another LPGA Tour Player who made a huge move on Saturday. After finishing her round yesterday with a double bogey, the fiery player carded a 66 today.
"Last night I got a facial, and went out to dinner. I got to relax a little bit," Kim said, talking about her round yesterday. "I just have to stay out of my own way. The less I think, the better I play." Her tournament low round vaulted her from a three-way tie for 10th to sole possession of the third place position.
Jeong Jang, playing in the final group today will find herself in the same situation tomorrow. Her steady, consistent play maintained her runner up position in the Michelob ULTRA Open.
Maria Hjorth also had a red-letter day. She went bogey-free and sprinkled five birdies around to move from 20th position to fourth place.
The No. 1 ranked Lorena Ochoa struggled, running four bogeys over five holes to finish 2-over-par for the day and 7-under for the tournament. |
